Medicine

Medicine refers to the study, treatment or prevention of diseases of the body. In the medieval period, Central Asia was home to some of the world's most advanced physicians. Where much knowledge had been lost in the West following the collapse of the Roman Empire, Islamic scholars collected and synthesized medical texts from across the ancient world into a sophisticated philosophy and practice of medicine. Greek, Persian, Roman, Syrian, Indian and Chinese insights were studied and incorporated into this system. The Umayyad and Abbassid Empires supported numerous scholars in this work, and sponsored translations of medical books especially intensively.
