From the Greek meaning 'love of wisdom', philosophy is perhaps best described as 'thinking about thinking'.
Central Asia was host to a thriving community of philosophers throughout the medieval period. Islamic theologians from the founding of the faith had considered questions of philosophy and metaphysics, and encouraged literacy and contemplation in their followers. By the 9th century, translations into Arabic of Greek philosophy, particularly Aristotle and Plato, had begun to deeply affect the discourse of Central Asian philosophers. Eventually, these imported ideas were largely abandoned under pressure from an opposing ideology which found religion and philosophy incompatible. However, philosophical debate continued in many regions focusing more on spiritual and mystical concepts.
